The TRIBE OF READERS is the brainchild of the PlayTownRoma Cultural Association. It is an answer to concerns about the steady decline in reading and is intended for people who, like us, still believe there is a real and urgent need to read and to tell and share stories with others. The Tribe of Readers aims not only to simply encourage reading, but also to intervene directly, over a twelve-month period, to improve the quality and ways in which children and youngsters read.
Today, thanks to our encounter with the Province of Rome and with support from the Chamber of Commerce, the Tribe is now becoming “something else” and with encouragement from the parents, friends and institutions that have, over time, come to appreciate our work throughout the local area, we have become passionately determined to extend the parameters of this project by creating the first edition of theTRIBE OF READERS, Festival of Reading with Children, to be held in Rome and throughout the surrounding Province from June 2 – 6, 2010.
The Festival of Reading will be an opportunity to showcase a collective body of work by many individuals to promote the most important and innovative propositions to be found in the world of Italian publishing and to create a greater awareness of what is on offer. This will be accomplished by occupying new locations: those associated with leisure activities, socialising, having fun, holding parties and enjoying street life. Areas of life that are shared by everyone. While the reader is the true protagonist in the act of reading, the practice of reading itself will be the common thread binding this whole event together.
Every central square and gathering place included in the programme will offer youngsters the chance to share the reading experience thanks to a series of live readings. Additionally, the expectation is that small independent reading groups will spontaneously form and if they contact the organisers these groups will be included in the event’s official programme.
The Festival’s locations will be peacefully invaded by children, their parents, teachers and librarians. Get-togethers and special events will be created in collaboration with the Italian nationwide project “Nati per Leggere” (“Born to Read”) and “IBBY Italia” (the Italian branch of the “International Board on Books for Young People”). The objective is that every single reader, shop, school, book club, library and bookshop becomes an active participant in the project, the sole aim of which is to encourage and pass on the habit of reading to as many people as possible.
